Chrome chalcedony is a mineral that exhibits a green hue due to the presence of small amounts of chromium.
It is a type of chalcedony and is primarily found in Namibia and Zimbabwe.
Locally, it is referred to as Mtorolite, Mtorodite or Matorolite.
It is also sold under the trade name Aquaprase.
Historical Information
During the Roman Empire era, Chrome Chalcedony was a popular choice for jewellery and seals.
Despite being extensively used, the origin of this mineral remains unclear. While Pliny the Elder believed that it came from India, no deposits have been discovered there to date.
Some experts speculate that the source of Chrome Chalcedony might have been Anatolia, which is present-day Turkey, as the region is known to have deposits of the mineral.
However, Chrome Chalcedony vanished from use in the 2nd century and remained undiscovered until the 1950s when it was found in Zimbabwean deposits.
