Lapis Lazuli

Geological Information

Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue metamorphic rock composed largely of the mineral Lazurite.

It is mined in several countries, including Afghanistan, Chile and Russia.

The rock is formed by contact metamorphism of limestone and is often associated with other minerals, such as pyrite and calcite.

Historical Information

It was first mined in the Middle East over 6,000 years ago and was highly prized by the ancient Egyptians, who used it for jewelry, amulets, and even ground it into a fine powder to create the pigment ultramarine for their paintings.

Lapis lazuli was also valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who believed it had healing properties.
